Durga India
Organisation purpose / activities
We are a citizen sector organization focusing on gender justice in public spaces. We do this by enabling women and girls to conquer public spaces by providing adequate life skills in them to understand behavior and deter crime. We also do this by working actively with the ecosystem, putting power back in the hands of common people by making them active bystanders as well as taking responsibility for safety in their hands. In all our efforts we work closely with the system including state actors, duty bearers, other civil society organizations, institutions for education like schools and colleges as well as custodians of safety in residential places.
Vision: Orchestrating the role of all four players: men, women, communities and spaces in women’s safety.
Mission: Safety for all against sexual harassment.
Impact assessment
– Worked with over 12,000 individuals from various schools, colleges, shelter homes, various communities like BBMP, BMTC, etc, and enabled them to take control over their safety from gender based violence/discrimination.
– We have partnered with over 15 colleges in Bangalore and set up VOICE Labs, where the students engage intensively and make those campuses safe and gender equitable.
– We have identified, trained and felicitated over 500 street vendors, taxi/auto drivers, delivery agents, sanitation workers, etc as Active Bystanders (DARE), who intervene when they see a woman in distress in public places.
– In 2015,we were the pioneers to work extensively in making public transportation safe in collaboration with BMTC and piloted 150 Durga Panic Alarms in BMTC and 5 in DTC (Delhi transportation) which can be triggered when a woman is experiencing a safety threat inside the bus and this had influenced the policy making to a greater extent . We have sensitized over 500 bus conductors and drivers on women safety.
– We have supported 100+ women in redressal processes for instances of gender based violences encountered by them, from mental health support to legal aid.
– Hosted 27 editions of Durga Listens, a platform where commoners come and share their personal experiences of patriarchy and find common solutions. We have had 90+ speakers and 800+ listeners so far.
