Women’s Week Celebrations
In commemoration of International Women’s Day on March 8th, BIC is hosting a number of performances and panel discussions, among other things, to celebrate women. The events are spread across March 8th – 14th (Friday to Thursday).

March 8 | Friday | 7pm – 8:30pm
The Art of Freedom | The Life and Legacy of Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay
A talk by historian Nico Slate, about a pathbreaking champion of women’s rights, fearless anticolonial activist, fierce critic of racism and class inequality, and tireless advocate for the arts and crafts, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay. He will be introduced by Ramachandra Guha.

Shakti Sangeet | A Tribute to Women Composers
Shakti Sangeet offers a curated presentation of musical compositions by female composers from both historical and contemporary periods, spanning various genres within Hindustani Classical Music, Vachanas, and Bhajans.

Bangalore Broadway Company | An Eternal Love Story with Harmony | 11:30am
This programme by the Bangalore Broadway Company will focus on acapella and unplugged acoustic renditions of world folk. The performance is a curated set to take the audience on a cultural experience of music from Bulgaria, Russia, India, Japan, West Africa and many more.

ಮಾರಮ್ಮನ ಜಾತ್ರೆ | Maaramman Jaathre | Women filmmakers in Kannada | 2pm
This double bill showcases films by two emerging independent filmmakers working in Kannada. Preethi Sagar’s Aha Nanna Maduve Ante (28 minutes | Kannada) follows Sinchana, a young woman in Bangalore, as she grapples with societal pressures and her father’s insistence on marriage. Meanwhile, Megha Havanje’s Enso (29 minutes | Kannada) delves into the emotional journey of a father and daughter coping with the unexpected loss of a loved one.

Connecting the Generations | Piano Miniatures from Vienna
Vienna has been an important centre for music for many centuries, with resident operas, orchestras and musicians of renown. It has also been a meeting place for composers from around Europe who lived and worked there. Marialena Fernandes will perform what she calls ‘Structured Miniatures’ from Vienna’s vibrant musical culture: Bagatelle – Prelude – Intermezzo – Rhapsody.

Mathe | A Bharatanatyam Ode to Motherhood
Mathe is a Bharatanatyam performance that explores the profound role of motherhood. Through the artistry of dance and poetry in various languages, it delves into the multitude of emotions experienced by a woman when she becomes a mother.

Nādānt | The Eternal Dance of Awareness | 7pm
Nādānt, is an exploration by Divya Goswami, navigating through the leela of the manifest form of the cosmic dancer and the visual discourse on the true purpose of existence; until there is no more. This 80 minute production, juxtaposes the dyads within Shiva, who moves like the ripples on the placid countenance, while bubbling on the surface into a volcanic fury.

Legacy (Part 1) | A Tribute to Women in Hindustani Music | 6:30pm
Pune based author, columnist and rasika, Gouri Dange, presents a guided listening session featuring some of the finest Hindustani women musicians down the ages in the BIC Library. Following this, Bangalore based Agra Gharana vocalist Manasa Sastry presents a Hindustani Khayal concert as a tribute to the women musicians of the past.

Legacy (Part 2) | An Evening of Carnatic Music and Storytelling
The two-part program will present a close look at the lives, influences and artistic careers of two highly regarded Carnatic Women Gurus Vidushi Suguna Varadachari and Vidushi Rama Ravi and their disciples in the context of the trajectory of Carnatic music in the last hundred odd years.
