Yagyaseni
The Ultimate Oblation
Performer
The ultimate oblation is a solo dance theatre production based on Jnanpith awardee, Dr. Pratibha Ray’s novel Yagyaseni. In this interpretation, Draupadi, who emerged out of yagya or the sacrificial fire, ultimately offers her emotions as a daughter, wife, mother and most importantly as a woman, in an aahuti (oblation) to invoke the lord of dharma. She, in the course of her lifespan, goes through tremendous emotional turmoil but still, with every unacceptable incidence of her life, expands herself and gradually becomes selfless for the sake of establishing dharma.
If the Mahabharat is the dharmayagya, then Draupadi is the ultimate oblation and thus her eternal brilliance pervades into divinity. In the process of establishing Draupadi’s emotions, Sangita Chatterjee has tried to closely examine the relationship of Draupadi & Krishna. Yagyaseni was premiered in Delhi in 2019 and post the pandemic, it has travelled to Kolkata & Kerala.
