What She Said
Six Women of the Ramayana
Artists
Language: English
“Think Ramayana and you think heroes. Mostly men. What about the women on the fringes of these great tales?”, asks playwright Gowri Ramnarayan.
What She Said explores the lives of six epic women spanning three mythic kingdoms. While the original epic might relegate these women to supporting characters, Gowri Ramnarayan fashions them as individuals in their own right. “I saw how they faced their own struggles for survival. I also heard them raising disturbing questions which are very much alive in our contemporary world. Their problems are our problems.”
The play follows Sita’s sister Urmila, Kaikeyi’s confidante Manthara, Ravana’s sister Surpanakha, Vali’s consort Tara, Ravana’s queen Mandodari, and the forgotten Shanta, Rama’s sister. In her blazingly original script, their voices emerge as complex, intelligent, and authentic in bearing witness to injustice and atrocity.
As the play unfolds in six episodes, each woman’s monologue provides perspectives simultaneously unique and universal.
This event is a part of our programming to celebrate International Women’s Day. Music, theatre, and conversation: by women, for everyone.
