Dhrupad is one of the oldest forms of Hindustani classical music, and tonight, Mukund Dev Sahoo shows you how it works.
He begins with a lecture demonstration. The slow unfolding of raag through aalap. The attention to breath and resonance, the purity of each note. What makes Dhrupad different from khayal and other later forms. How it moved from temples to courts. How Naad Yoga shapes what both performer and listener experience.

Mukund Dev Sahoo
Mukund Dev Sahoo was born in Odisha into a devotional Vaishnava family. His early exposure to music came through devotional singing traditions. After formal training in Khayal under maestros of the Gwalior and Agra gharanas, he dedicated himself fully to the study and practice of Dhrupad. Following the Dagar Vani lineage, he trained under the renowned Padma Shri Gundecha Brothers at the Dhrupad Sansthan, Bhopal.
A recognized All India Radio and Doordarshan artist and SPIC MACAY empaneled performer, he has presented nearly a hundred concerts across India and internationally, including performances at the Cosmopolis Festival (Hong Kong), NCPA Mumbai, Saptak Festival Ahmedabad, Raja Rani Music Festival Bhubaneswar, and the International Dhrupad Mela Varanasi.
Founder and Chairman of the Dhrupad Music Foundation (DMF), he is recognized for initiating Deva Vani Dhrupad, a mantra-infused Aalap tradition rooted in the philosophy of Naad Yoga the union of sound, breath, and consciousness. He has trained nearly 200 students and regularly conducts workshops, lecture-demonstrations, and Naad Yoga sessions across universities and cultural institutions. His work seeks to revive the devotional essence of Dhrupad while introducing contemporary audiences to its profound artistic and spiritual dimensions.
Prabodh Shyam
Prabodh Shyam is a Bengaluru-based pakhawaj artist and a fifth-generation musician from the renowned Anoor musical family. Trained under Pandit Jagadeesh Kurthkoti and currently studying the Dhrupad style with Shri Sukhada Munde, he has accompanied eminent artists including Pandit Uday Bhawalkar, Pandit Prashant and Nishant Mallick, and Vidushi Jyoti Hegde. He is also an active member of the percussion ensemble Layalavanya.
