The memers, content creators, livestreamers, conspiracy theorists, and influencers we are taught not to take seriously, but somehow cannot peel our eyes away. These so-called unserious corners of the internet may understand contemporary India better than the people we are told to listen to: its aspirations, anxieties, and caste and class contradictions, refracted through the internet’s strangest corners.
Writer and filmmaker Anurag Minus Verma writes about it all in his new book, The Great Indian Brainrot. In this session, he is joined by journalist Priya Ramani. Together, they navigate some of the most absurd and political corners of the internet. Though many of his examples arise from North India, the questions they raise are relevant far beyond any one region.

Anurag Minus Verma is a writer, filmmaker, and podcaster whose work explores culture, politics, and contemporary India. His essays have appeared in publications including The New York Times, The Indian Express, The Times of India, Newslaundry, and Mint Lounge. He is the host of the Anurag Minus Verma Podcast, one of India’s leading independent podcasts on politics, society, and popular culture. The Great Indian Brain Rot is his latest book.

Priya Ramani is a Bangalore-based journalist. She is the co-founder of the award-winning India Love Project and on the editorial board of news website Article 14. She is a columnist for The Hindu Sunday Magazine and Quint.
