What does it mean to live a life that truly honours the planet that sustains us?

In this thoughtful talk, Harish Chandra Verma reflects on his lifelong journey of engaging with science not as a detached discipline, but as a practice rooted in ethics, resilience, and reverence for the natural world. Drawing from personal experiences and decades of scientific work, he explores how meaningful innovation emerges when curiosity is balanced with conscience, when progress is guided by sensitivity to the ecosystems that make life possible.

Earth remains the only known home where life flourishes through the vast generosity of Nature. And of all living beings, humans alone hold the remarkable ability to imagine, create, and shape futures yet to come. But this creativity comes with a responsibility to act with care, foresight, and a deep sense of stewardship.

This session invites listeners to pause, reflect, and consider how science can help us nurture both the planet and ourselves; one thoughtful choice at a time.

This lecture is a part of Azim Premji University’s Public Lecture Series.

Harish Chandra Verma (H.C. Verma) is an Indian experimental physicist, author, and emeritus professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. Best known for his iconic two-volume textbook Concepts of Physics, his work has shaped generations of students preparing for competitive exams. His research focuses on nuclear physics, and he has been widely recognised for his contributions to science education, including the Padma Shri (2021) and the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Shiksha Puruskar.

He is also the co-founder of Shiksha Sopan, an initiative that supports the education of children from economically weaker communities near the IIT Kanpur campus. Through his teaching, experiments, and outreach, Professor Verma has played a pivotal role in popularising physics across India.
