A Dialogue in Dance
Performers
Sanjog celebrates the artistic journey and long time relationship between two dancers, friends and colleagues – Debashree Bhattacharya and Sohini Debnath – highlighting the bond they shared with their Guru Padmashree Rani Karna ji and their dialogue with dance.
As a part of this performance, they will be presenting a bouquet of duet performances that seek to discover popular facets of Kathak seen through the lens of their unique aesthetic adventure.
The presentations will include:
| LABBAK | An exploration of the idiosyncrasies of the 5 and ½ beat time cycle |
| ARANG (Thematic) | A Jugalbandi between two stringed instruments |
| CHATUSHPADI CHAKRADHARAN | Two rare compositions on the persona of Lord Krishna |
| GHAZAL | Exploring the idea of VYOG and SANJOG in Kathak dance |
| BAUL | An experimental piece exploring the rustic flavour of Bengal |

Performers
Debashree Bhattacharya
Debashree Bhattacharya trained in kathak under Padmashree Smt. Rani Karnaa. An A grade solo artist for Kolkata Doordarshan, she is also registered with Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre. She has performed in Qatar, Bhutan, Kuwait, the UK and Wales,Georgia ,Lebanon, South Sudan, Durban, Bangladesh and Japan. She has also performed for a number of prestigious institutions including the Sangeet Natak Akademi, NCPA and Kathak Kendra. She has performed in Khajuraho, Konarak, Nishagandhi Festival and many other well known dance festivals in India.
A graduate of Lady Brabourne College, Debashree completed her masters in Philosophy from Jadavpur University. She also holds a Sangeet Prabhakar from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad. She has headed Brindar – a learning space for kathak for last 20 years. She has conducted workshops in different schools and colleges all over India under SPIC MACAY, ERCEN and Junoon (Mumbai).She has also conducted workshops for dancers and non – dancers in London and Wales.
Debashree is the co-founder of Ranan Performance Collective and presently Secretary of her Guru’s Academy Samskritiki Shreyaskar.
Sohini Debnath
A Top Grade solo artiste with the Doordarshan Kendra, Sohini was initiated into Kathak at the early age of three. She has been under the able guidance of renowned Kathak exponent and Guru Padmashree Smt. Rani Karnaa. She has also received primary training in Odissi and Hindustani Classical Music.
A graduate in Geography from Presidency College, Kolkata she completed her masters degree in Kathak from Rabindra Bharati University. She has won numerous awards including gold medals at the Doverlane Music Conference, State Music Academy and the Governors Gold Medal at the East Zonal Competition organized by EZCC. She is the recipient of the National Scholarship for Dance from the Govt. of India and is empanelled with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations; ICCR, New Delhi and Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi.
Sohini has traveled widely in Europe; Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark and Switzerland for solo Kathak performances. She had opportunities to perform in countries like Lebanon, Sudan, South Africa and Mauritius. She’s performed across India as a solo dancer and also with her Guru Smt. Rani Karnaa.
Presently Sohini is the Director of Samskritiki Shreyaskar, Guru Rani Karnaa’s Kathak Academy in Kolkata and conducts regular classes, programmes and productions. She is a faculty member of Shikshak Online Music and Dance School, South Hampton. Sohini is also an empanelled artiste with the SPIC MACAY and has been conducting Kathak workshop demonstrations in different schools across India.
