India takes pride in its two classical music systems: Carnatic and Hindustani. Karnataka holds the unique distinction of being the only state to have produced stalwarts in both traditions. The cultural and historical foundations for this phenomenon are particularly fascinating.

The Wadiyars of Mysore, renowned patrons of music, maintained significant cultural exchanges with the royal court of Baroda. The reciprocal visits of court musicians between these kingdoms profoundly influenced the development of both musical streams in Karnataka.

Over the centuries, all four major gharanas of Hindustani music have flourished in Karnataka. Indeed, the state’s contribution to classical music has been so significant that traditional scholars often look to Karnataka’s artists as exemplars of pure gayaki (vocal style).

This lecture-demonstration while exploring this remarkable musical heritage, aims to illuminate Karnataka’s extraordinary contribution to India’s classical music traditions.
