A Workshop on Indian Traditional Games

This workshop explores India’s traditional games, from seed-sowing board games to lively outdoor play, passed down across generations. Participants will learn and play a curated selection of five to eight games chosen to suit the group, discovering the strategy, wit, and community spirit built into each one. What might a game invented centuries ago still have to teach us about patience, cooperation, and joy?
The session moves between quiet, tactical play and boisterous group games, layering theory into hands-on practice as participants pick up rules, strategies, and the stories behind them. Games are drawn from a wider repertoire and vary by group, spanning seed-sowing games like Pallankuzhi and Alukuzhi Mane, dice-based games such as Thayam and Pagade, strategy games including the Tower of Brahma and Goat and Tiger, war-strategy games like Country Chess and Nine Men’s Morris, and bonus play with spinning tops, marbles, and cup and ball. No prior experience is necessary. Traditional games are living heritage. As carriers of mathematical logic, social rhythm, and cultural memory, these games continue to reward a room of strangers as readily as a family across three generations.

Immaculate Antony A
Immaculate Antony A. is the visionary founder of Ima reCreation, an initiative that has revived over 150 traditional games from Indian, Asian, Roman, Mayan, Egyptian, African and tribal cultures. With over two decades of experience in the IT industry, she transitioned from corporate leadership to cultural entrepreneurship in 2015. Her work has reached hundreds of thousands of people across schools, universities, NGOs, corporates and communities, in India and abroad. She has presented her work globally, including at the XI Congress on Traditional Games in Spain, has trained over 300 educators, and conducted credit courses at Christ and St. Joseph’s Universities. She holds a Singapore Book of Records mention for conducting 106 games for thousands of participants.
