Scholars Chris Chekuri and Srinivas Reddy discuss Reddy’s new book RAYA: Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara. This exemplary biography brings the whole world of Vijayanagara to life in a unique way.

Professor Reddy reveals the remarkable life and times of Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara (1509-1529).

In dialogue with Professor Chekuri, Professor Reddy will contextualize the king’s biography within the dynamic social, cultural and political milieu of premodern South India.



Srinivas Reddy

Author & Musician
Srinivas Reddy is a scholar, translator and musician. He studied classical South Asian languages and literatures at UC Berkeley and currently teaches at Brown University and IIT Gandhinagar. Srinivas is also a concert sitarist and spends his time performing, teaching and conducting research around the world. His previous books include translations of Krishnadevaraya’s Amuktamalyada and Kalidasa’s Meghadutam and Malavikagnimitram.

Chris Chekuri


Chris Chekuri is an Associate Professor in the History Department at San Francisco State University, where he teaches courses on world history and the history of colonial India. He received his PhD from the University of Madison, Wisconsin. His research interests include the study of states and families, early modern empires in the Indo-Islamic World, comparative colonialisms and nationalisms, modern Telugu literary criticism, and globalization.
