State of Working India
Mahesh Vyas, Amit Basole, Aseem Shrivastava, Mallige, Moderated by Madan Padaki
This panel will dwell on the subjects of quantity and quality of employment in Indian economy. It will also explore possible measures to achieve better rates of employment and regular incomes for all. Data and insights from the recent ‘State of Working India’ by Azim Premji University’s Centre for Sustainable Employment will provide the basis for the discussion.

Mahesh Vyas
Mahesh Vyas is Managing Director and CEO of Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy Pvt. Ltd. He is the chief architect of CMIE’s proprietary databases. He created the Consumer Pyramids database by setting up the largest, fastest and technologically the most advanced household survey in India. Besides other applications of this database, he initiated and created the first set of fast frequency macroeconomic indicators (unemployment and consumer sentiments), from a private agency in India.
Amit Basole
Amit Basole is Associate Professor of Economics at the School of Liberal Studies and Head, Centre for Sustainable Employment, at Azim Premji University, Bangalore. He has previously taught at the University of Massachusetts, Boston and Bucknell University. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Amit’s research combines quantitative and qualitative methods to address poverty and inequality, the structure of the Indian economy, and the economics of informal knowledge.
Aseem Shrivastava
Aseem Shrivastava is a Delhi-based writer, teacher and ecological thinker. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He has taught at universities in India, the US and Norway. Since 2005, he has been working independently, researching, writing and lecturing nationally and internationally on issues associated with globalization and its multiple ecological and other impacts. He is the author (with Ashish Kothari) of the books Churning the Earth: The Making of Global India (Penguin Viking, New Delhi, 2012), and Prithvi Manthan (Rajkamal Prakashan, New Delhi, 2016).
Mallige
Ms. Mallige is working with a peoples movement called Karnataka Janashakthi as an Activist. Janashakthi in association with other like minded organisations and individuals had taken up a pre election campaign amongst youth called ‘youth for employment’. Ms. Mallige worked in this campaign as a volunteer
Madan Padaki
Madan is an entrepreneur & angel investor. Madan started his entrepreneurial journey when he co-founded MeritTrac in 2000 as a pioneering idea in skills assessments and scaled it into one of the leading assessments companies in India. In 2013 with a vision of transforming rural youth to be entrepreneurs, he founded 1Bridge, a platform that empowers rural entrepreneurs to accelerate abundance of access, choice & convenience to rural citizens, leveraging technology. Today, 1Bridge is present in 40+ districts across South & East India and has over 1000+ rural youth engaged in delivering services to rural consumers.
