O Gaanewali
Celebrating the Women of Thumri, Dadra, & Ghazal
Artists & Performers
Entertaining the nobility of India, her life was different from the other women around her. She had sexual agency, financial independence and most importantly, she was highly skilled at her art; her music!
Tawaif’s and women performers were given a reputation; one that made their life difficult and tainted them as prostitutes and sex workers. Unfortunately, history doesn’t credit them enough for their valuable contribution to Indian culture. Their contribution of music.
We will be tracing the evolution of this beautiful genre, that gained popularity through performances by tawaif’s and many other women performers over the years. This will be done through beautiful renditions of thumri, dadra, hori, jhoola, chaiti, ghazal and so on.
We hope you remember the Gaanewalis by this rich cultural art and heritage.
