Managing Religious Legacies
Migration and reconstruction among the Sindhis of India

Throughout the centuries, the people of the Sindh province had built a specific identity of faith, mostly made of Nanakpanth, Daryapanth and Sufism dating back to the 10th century. After the partition in 1947 when Sindh became part of Pakistan a majority of the population of the province migrated to India taking with them a unique belief system specific to the valley. The talk will take some cases studies for analyzing how the Sindhis adapted their cultural and religious legacies to a new environment in India.

Michel Boivin
Michel Boivin is director of the Centre for South Asian Studies at the School of Advanced Studies, Paris Research University. He is teaching contemporary history and anthropology of the societies and cultures of South Asia, with a focus on the Sindhis. He has published 15 books and numerous academic papers. His last book is The Hindu Sufis of South Asia: Partition, Shrine culture and the Sindhis of India.
