Mental health remains a stigma for most Indians today. How can Indians overcome anxiety and depression? What are the new challenges posed by a global pandemic, economic uncertainty and an indefinite lockdown? Episode 6 of BIC Talks explores various questions and misconceptions around mental health in India.

Dr. Shyam K. Bhat and Anna Chandy are in conversation with host Pavan Srinath. Dr. Shyam K. Bhat is a Physician and Psychiatrist, with over 20 years experience, and has a special interest in holistic and integrative methods of treatment. Anna Chandy is a social psychologist and counsellor. Shyam and Anna are both trustees of The Live Love Laugh Foundation against depression.

Dr. Shyam Bhat

Dr Shyam K Bhat MD is a Psychiatrist, Integrative Medicine specialist, and writer.

Dr Bhat has a rare combination of postgraduate training and American Board certifications in two specialities – Psychiatry (American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology) and Internal Medicine (American Board of Internal Medicine). He is also board certified in Psychosomatic Medicine (ABPN subspeciality), the study of conditions at the interface of body and mind.  Dr Bhat combines these qualifications with a deep study and understanding of eastern philosophy and healing practices, and has been called a pioneer of Integrative Medicine and holistic psychiatry in India.

He founded the Mind-Body Clinic, Bangalore Private in 2010 and expanded in 2016 to Seraniti.com offering online counseling, psychotherapy and integrated mind-body wellness solutions . Seraniti was acquired by Cure.fit and merged with mindfit in 2018, to expand the vision of an integrated approach to mental wellness, with Yoga, Meditation, Therapy and Psychiatry.

Dr Bhat has developed the evidenced based psychotherapeutic method,  Integral Self Therapy, a transpersonal psychotherapy that combines the practice of meditation, the philosophy of Vedanta, along with insights from gestalt therapy, and existential therapies. He is a recipient of the Norris Brookens award, and member of Alpha Omega Alpha that recognizes excellence in scholarship and the highest ideals in the profession of medicine. Dr Bhat is a trustee at the Live Love Laugh Foundation, founded by Deepika Padukone, to increase awareness and decrease stigma around depression.

Dr Bhat is the author of the best-selling book “How to heal your broken heart: A psychiatrist’s guide to dealing with heartbreak”, published by Juggernaut.

Dr Bhat graduated with an MBBS, from Bangalore Medical College in 1996. During internship, he also worked as a RJ for a year at Radio Mid-Day, Bangalore. He began his postgraduate training in the United Kingdom(1997) with the All Birmingham Psychiatry Training Scheme.

Dr Bhat moved to the United States in 1999, where he completed a 5 year combined residency program in Internal medicine and Psychiatry at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SIU), Springfield, Illinois, USA.

Anna Chandy

Anna Chandy has been deeply involved in the mental health domain in India for more than 25 years. Her body of work encompasses counselling individuals from various walks of life including social influencers, entre-preneurs and business families; training and mentoring counsellors; and leading important strategic interventions aimed at driving systemic change in the country’s mental health ecosystem.

Drawing on her rich experience, Anna has pioneered changes in the coun-selling profession in India, advocating international standards of practice and an ethical and relational approach to counselling. She is accredited to the prestigious International Transactional Analysis Association and runs advanced Personal Development Programs using Transactional Analysis (TA) as well as training groups to certify towards becoming Certified Transactional Analysts in Coaching, Counselling or Adult Education.

As a philanthropist and a widely acknowledged thought leader in the mental health sector, she is now partnering with social influencers to create a community support model that addresses the mental health needs of a societal ecosystem. She also serves as the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of The Live Love Laugh Foundation (TLLLF), a charitable trust which was founded in 2015 by actor Deepika Padukone, to give hope to every individual experiencing stress, anxiety and depression.

Anna is a columnist and author and her first book, “Battles in the Mind – Conquering and Win-ning Over Emotional Pain,” was published by Penguin Random House in June 2017. Anna be-lieves difficult times provide a space for deep self-introspection, reflection and learning. She has addressed a range of audiences in India and globally, including at TEDx.
