We often ignore cities as habitats for life forms other than humans. This talk will introduce the biodiversity of urban areas and focus on sustaining areas that support them. It will showcase the most commonly found life forms of our cities, their habitats, the best places to see them, the tools needed to watch them, and how one could contribute their observations to science – focusing on our city, Bangalore. It will also briefly touch upon the changing environment, memories of what used to be, and what one can do to preserve what we have.

Speakers

Ulhas Anand

Co-founder, EcoEdu

Ulhas Anand has been associated with birdwatching, wildlife, and the environment for over three decades, starting out as a birdwatcher and a naturalist. His primary interest has been in building awareness and sensitizing people towards the outdoors – conducting many nature camps, talks, walks, and workshops for schools, colleges, and corporates.

He’s the co-founder of EcoEdu, an initiative that works to deliver high-quality environment education through activities and publications. He has worked with over 100 schools and colleges in Bangalore. EcoEdu has published a series of books on urban flora, including Avenue Trees and Garden Climbers. Some community activities supported by EcoEdu include Bengaluru Bird Day and Neralu, the tree festival. He has also led a dialogue around sustainable redesign and conducted a series of workshops on ‘Nature Inspired Design Thinking’ for architects and product designers. These workshops have inspired patents, research papers, and publications by participants. He is part of advisory committees for lakes and RWAs on biodiversity. As a moderator for over 15 years, he has helped grow one of the largest online discussion groups on birds and wildlife in India.

Along with his interest in wildlife, he’s worked with multiple corporates over the last two decades, designing and building usable products. He currently works as the Vice President of Product Management at Tyfone Inc., a Portland-based startup in the Fintech space. He has done his Post-Graduation in Marketing from the University of Wales, UK.
