Janamana Spandana
An Evening of Kannada Dalit, Folk & Protest Music
Performers
Janamana Samskrutika Sangathane, a Mysore-based cultural organization, has been engaged in taking theatre, music, and theatre workshops to the people for over three decades. It is the brainchild of H Janardhan, a former Director of Rangayana. Janardhan began as a young naturally talented singer performing in anti-Emergency and other protest plays in Karnataka in the 1970s.
After gaining formal theatre training at the National School of Drama, New Delhi, he played an active role, along with BV Karanth, in the setting up of Rangayana. He has also been closely associated with Kannada cinema, winning awards for playback singing. He has also won the Karnataka Nataka Academy award. A passionate practitioner of the use of street theatre in the literacy campaign, he has been the Karnataka state convener of the literacy movement.
Janamana will be performing folk songs, vachanas, songs from plays, and progressive music.

H Janardhan
Beginning as a young naturally talented Dalit singer, Janardhan brought several of the works of Dalit poet Siddalingaiah into theatre performances. He went on to gain formal training in New Delhi at the National School of Drama. He was an active force, along with BV Karanth, in the setting up of Rangayana.
Janardhan has directed plays by Girish Karnad, UR Anantamurthy, Devanoor Mahadeva and Siddalingaiah, among others. A unique singing talent he has lent his voice to the plays of almost all the major directors in Kannada theatre. He is a winner of the Karnataka Nataka Academy award. He has also been closely associated with Kannada cinema, winning awards for playback singing. As one of the organizers of Samudaya, Janardhan played a pioneering role in staging street plays in Karnataka, besides taking part as an actor. He went on to become one of the pioneers in providing a cultural dimension to the literacy movement in Karnataka, writing and directing a number of plays with this mission. He has been the State Convenor of the Literacy Movement in Karnataka.
