Founder, Janamana

Beginning as a young naturally talented Dalit singer, Janardhan brought several of the works of Dalit poet Siddalingaiah into theatre performances. He went on to gain formal training in New Delhi at the National School of Drama. He was an active force, along with BV Karanth, in the setting up of Rangayana.

Janardhan has directed plays by Girish Karnad, UR Anantamurthy, Devanoor Mahadeva and Siddalingaiah, among others. A unique singing talent he has lent his voice to the plays of almost all the major directors in Kannada theatre. He is a winner of the Karnataka Nataka Academy award. He has also been closely associated with Kannada cinema, winning awards for playback singing. As one of the organizers of Samudaya, Janardhan played a pioneering role in staging street plays in Karnataka, besides taking part as an actor. He went on to become one of the pioneers in providing a cultural dimension to the literacy movement in Karnataka, writing and directing a number of plays with this mission.
