Philosophical Routes and Practical Journeys
Speakers
In this interactive and participatory talk by Alice Fox and Dr Hannah Macpherson, participants will be introduced to the underpinning ideals and philosophies of Inclusive Art, including the relational components to inclusive work, the philosophy of coming into being and the crucial emphasis on collaboration and creative listening.
The session will then address critics of such participatory practice and show how in art there is more than hope (or sweet dreams!), there are proven benefits (for culture, health and life).
The speakers suggest avoiding leaning into overly narrow identity-based work and instead embracing our commonalities—including all our diversity—through Inclusive Arts. This requires nuance. Reflecting on some of the journeys they have taken with the practice of Inclusive Arts in Asia, they will show how collaborative practices, first developed alongside neurodiverse people and people with learning disabilities, have become relevant to collaborating with a wide range of people.
The talk will then seek to answer the following provocations using some practical participatory activities:
- How do we travel at the speed of trust using forms of Inclusive Arts practice?
- What’s next for Inclusive Art? How might we ‘come into being’ inclusively with each other, our art materials and the environment?
This talk will include experiential group activities suitable to all. Come prepared to participate.

Alice Fox
Alice Fox is the Deputy Head of The School of Art at the University of Brighton where she founded and lead the pioneering MA Inclusive Arts Practice. She is the Director of the learning- disabled Rocket Artists Studios and has worked for many years with inclusive performance and visual arts alongside socially excluded groups, in particular people with learning disabilities and elders.
She often works internationally, training NGOs, cultural, health & education sector professionals and has delivered inclusive arts projects for Tate Exchange, The National Gallery and The British Council in Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea, Vietnam and Nepal. This work was recognised by winning The Times Higher Education Award for Excellence and Innovation in the Arts 2017.
Alice is interested in how participatory arts practice can combat isolation, prejudice and exclusion by providing meeting points, public platforms and common experience for diverse groups of people.
Hannah Macpherson
Dr Hannah Macpherson is Co-author with Alice Fox of Inclusive Arts Practice and Research: A Critical Manifesto and was Principal Investigator on Building Resilience through Collaborative
Community Arts Practice (funded by Research Council UK).
She is now a freelance consultant on a range of arts based research and development programs including the Institute of Development Studies-led Towards Brown Gold project which uses the arts to promote safe, sustainable sanitation. She has over 15 years experience of co- producing creative research with marginalised groups. Originally a geography academic and senior lecturer with expertise in participatory research, creative methods and critical theory.
