Madhavi Mudgal will explore her journey of finding possibilities within the Odissi framework to expand its boundaries. As a firm believer in our classical traditions, and having been an active participant in the restructuring of the form by her guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, she has choreographed several solo and group compositions over the last 45 years. This presentation will explore the ideas behind some of these compositions.

This is the first edition of ‘Dance – The Creative Process’ a lecture demonstration series presented by Kalavaahini in association with BIC, curated by Malavika Sarukkai. The series invites audiences into the intimate spaces of different dance forms across India, exploring the imaginative thinking and artistic choices of some of their most accomplished exponents.

Madhavi Mudgal embodies a distinctive artistic vision in Odissi, shaped by her multifaceted journey through India’s classical dance landscape as a soloist and choreographer. Her training with Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, along with her musical background, early training in Bharatanatyam and Kathak, and study of architecture, has enriched her choreographic vocabulary and shaped her approach to movement and composition.

This unique background is reflected in her works, where music and space become conscious elements of design. Her choreography creates visual harmonies that bring together the classical aesthetic with contemporary sensibilities.

Her contributions to Indian classical dance have been recognised through numerous awards and honours, including the Padma Shri from the President of India, the Central and Orissa State Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards, the Grande Médaille de la Ville de Paris, Delhi State Parishad Samman, and the Nritya Choodamani. She was also awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Government of France.

Madhavi Mudgal will be joined on stage by her disciples who will dance:

  • Sudha Mukhopadhyay
  • Shobha Bisht
  • Ishita Mohanty
  • Yamini Dikshit
  • Arnaaz Zamaan
