Throughout history, the greatest cultures of the world were noted for flourishing simultaneously in arts, science and business. It was also a time of great communities of critical thinkers that interwove all three fields, with less judgement and more learning. Over time, critical thinking has died down, and instead, nations of followers now pursue those perceived in power (from family, society, religion to social media and celebrities today). This has led to social norms being adhered to, without any question of whether they are fit for our times.
Alyque Padamsee was an icon who straddled the theatre and advertising worlds. He had a unique way of questioning the world and has brought this method of critical thinking to life through his book, Let Me Hijack Your Mind. This session explores the ideas laid out in Let Me Hijack Your Mind, in which Alyque Padamsee’s provocative thinking is captured. The book is co-authored by Vandana Saxena Poria, OBE who will lead the session.
After an introduction by Raell Padamsee, the panelists who cut across the very heart of Business as well as the Arts, will discuss some of the ideas from the book and how they can ignite a new culture of questioning. They will look at what the Arts teaches people and how they have brought those skills into the workspace. They will also discuss the value of critical thinking through exposure to different people, situations and experiences.
The session also reflects on how COVID gave people time to reassess and decide what was important to them, seeing beyond the social norms. So is it time to bring back critical thinking, to help us redefine the meaning of success for ourselves? And in so doing, empower ourselves to succeed?
The audience will be able to participate in the discussion through polls and see if their thinking has changed on social norms that have been with us for a long, long time. For example:
- Should marriage change to a renewable 5 year licence, to bring in aliveness?
- Should education become edutainment to ensure lifelong learning?
- What should your title at work really be? From CEO to C?O to create flourishing in the workplace
