The Holocaust was an unprecedented genocide, total and systematic, perpetrated by Nazi Germany and its collaborators, with the aim of annihilating the Jewish people, culture, and traditions from the face of the Earth during World War II. Six million Jews, along with five million other civilians were murdered. The Holocaust is a defining moment in the history of the Jewish nation and a reason for the establishment of the state of Israel. For Israelis, it is a mission to tell the story and make sure that horrors like this can never happen again.

However, it is not only the story of the Jewish people; it is a story of humankind. January 27th – the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau by Soviet troops in 1945 – was designated by the UN as international Holocaust Remembrance Day, a day to remember the atrocities and vow for a better future.

Presented by The Consulate General of Israel in a sombre remembrance ceremony.
