Raja Ravi Varma’s genius extended beyond the canvas into the realms of music, dance, and poetry. While renowned for his exquisite paintings, he was also a dancer, musician, and poet who initiated a tradition of dedicating poems to accompany his artworks. While his paintings have garnered widespread acclaim, his prowess as a dancer, musician, and poet remains relatively unacknowledged.

In tribute, Gayathri Madhusudan brings to life Ravi Varma’s undiscovered poetic gems through a Mohiniyattam performance that bridges the worlds of chithra kala (visual art), kavya kala (literary art), and nrithya kala (performing art) in an an evening of dance, celebration and remembrance.

Mohiniyattam Dancer

Gayathri, a Mohiniyattam enthusiast since age 5, trained under luminaries like Dr.N.K Geetha, Dr. Bharathi Sivaji and Dr. Kalamandalam Sugandhi. Her early performances on Doordarshan paved her path to a long and fruitful Mohiniyattam career. Beyond Mohiniyattam, Gayathri explored Bharathanatyam and Thiruvathirakali, viewing dance as a holistic way of life.

In 2013 she founded Dyuthi Dance Kalari, a nurturing place for women to explore dance while providing them with solace from life’s pressures. Dyuthi’s frequent collaborations with UL Care Nayanar Sadanam brings dance therapy to adults with intellectual challenges.

Gayathri’s contributions also extend to the Kabani Community Tourism & Services where she has been a part of many lecture demonstrations, workshops, and cultural events.

In 2019, the Directorate of General Education, Kerala, and in 2022, the Akhila Kerala Janadhipathya Mahila Association honored Gayathri for her many contributions to dance and women’s empowerment.
