11 women over the age of 50 recently journeyed from the Pongsau Pass in Arunachal Pradesh to Ladakh. Walking mostly on foot in tough conditions, they covered over 4800 km and 35 high passes in 141 days. The expedition aims to address the mindset of our society and highlight the need to keep fit as well as demonstrate that age or gender is no barrier for a fit and healthy lifestyle. It will also signify women empowerment, leadership, decision making, lifestyle and the importance of fitness for our entire community.
The members of this group come from all walks of life: home-makers, retired professionals and past summiteers of Mt Everest, ‘Everesters’ as they are called. 68 year old Vasumathi Srinivasan was a member of the team and will share her experiences of this epic journey. She will be in conversation with Sunil Chainani following which there will be a Q&A session with the audience.
Bangalore based Vasumathi is an experienced mountaineer who has been on several high altitude treks including the Karakoram pass, Everest Base camp, Mount Kilimanjaro, the Snowman trek in Bhutan and the Leh- Siachen Glacier expedition. She was a member of the All ladies cycling expedition from Kolkata to Kanyakumari and has also cycled from Kutch to Kerala.
A guest instructor for Basic and Advance Courses in Netaji Institute of Mountaineering and Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, she is well accustomed to the intricacies of mountain climbing. Her history of mountaineering expeditions and her previous interaction with the armed forces of India ensures a smooth and seamless Himalayan traverse.
Sunil Chainani is an angel investor and Management consultant. He is among India’s most experienced amateur long distance runners and has run several of the world famous big city marathons and ultra marathons. He has also been manager of medal winning Indian ultra marathon teams at international events.
