Lutherie is the making of stringed instruments out of wood, by hand.

Most of us are used to seeing factory-made instruments and tend to take them for granted. Understanding Lutherie gives us a glimpse into a very different world – one that combines design, deep understanding of tone and timbre and the manner in which every part of a guitar affects them, extreme respect for details and more details, the love of wood and mastery over craftsmanship of wood – a world of limitless possibilities, where no two instruments are ever alike.

This is the story of a pair of luthier-made instruments, a Bass and a Guitar; the passion and love that created them and the extraordinary relationship between Luthier and Musician they are based upon.

This session provides a glimpse into an art and a craft that has immense intricacies and of which very, very few people (including guitar players) are aware. Vinoo Matthew will demonstrate to people that there are no limits to intricacy and detail in anything one might choose to do – handmade garments to surgery to corporate governance.

The talk will be followed by a performance by the Sarpajur Blues Band, a duo consisting of Vinoo Matthew on electric guitar and Shekhar Seshadri on acoustic guitar. The Sarjapur Blues Band (SBB) is an underground, eclectic, backstreet, workingmen’s, original, rhythm and blues band

Speaker & Performers

Vinoo Matthew

Electric Guitar

Vinoo has been playing music for longer than anyone ought to, and has played rock, jazz, blues, fusion and music that no one listens to. He is a firm believer in musical promiscuity and plays/has played Bass with the Rex Rozario Quintet, Aftermath, River, Gerard Machado Network, Ministry of Blues, Cantonment Jazz Terminus, Chronic Blues Band, Bangalore Jazz & Abstract Music Club, Southern Discomfort, etc. ad nauseum. He also plays lead guitar with the underground group, the Sarjapur Blues Band, proving Frank Zappa’s statement: “All bass players are failed lead guitarists”.

Shekhar Seshadri

Acoustic Guitar

Shekhar Seshadri trained in Hindustani Classical vocals and tabla as a child. For the last 45 years he has been playing the Acoustic Guitar and singing original compositions, 35 of which have been with his musical soul brother, Vinoo Matthew. He is half of the duo of the Sarjapur Blues Band, where he plays acoustic guitar and sings.
