In the Indian subcontinent, the role of a preceptor, a teacher or a Guru can never be adequately emphasised, be it in the spiritual disciplines or in an artistic domain. In the Indian Classical Art traditions, which is the Hindustani [North Indian classical art form] and the Carnatic [South Indian classical art form] streams, the Guru occupies a very unique position – a position so important that for the Sadhaka or the seeker, the Guru becomes a Haven. A Guru’s grace is ardently sought by the disciple like the Chaatakaa bird that feeds only on the rain drops, as the Guru undoubtedly becomes a rain bearing cloud to all his disciples.

Guru Naman is an attempt to celebrate the Guru Shishya Parampara, to describe and experience the journey of a lost and distraught Sadhaka who feels the need for a Guru and the phases of travails and turmoils, and ultimately surrender, undergone by the Sadhaka that paves the way for a liberation or as we call it, Moksha.

The evening will explore these emotions with some story telling and some compositions in the Hindustani Khayal tradition that verily echo these sentiments.
