Directed by Miriam Chandy Menacherry

Can shadows speak?

An artist relentlessly sprays silhouettes on public walls tagged #missing.
An activist accompanies rescued girls across international borders.
Parallel narratives intersect to reveal a sliver of hope when women imaginatively challenge a powerful trafficking nexus operating in a country where every 8 minutes a child goes missing.

“From the Shadows is different because it shuns sensationalism for a dignified approach. The film does not point fingers but allows viewers to join the dots to reveal a canvas of traffickers with friendly faces – a family member, neighbour, policeman or NGO worker. Exploring the intersection of art and activism, the film refrains from a final verdict.” – Miriam Chandy Menacherry

The screening will be followed by a discussion between the director, Miriam Chandy Menacherry, screenwriter, Triparna Banerjee, co-producer, Aalia Furniturewala, finance head, Sharon D’Mello and Sushma Veerappa. There will be a Q&A session following the discussion.

In collaboration with Vikalp Bengaluru.

Director, Producer & Writer

Miriam makes films that celebrate everyday heroes, approaching every story through the lens of popular culture to find
the intersection of social cause and the arts. She shoots for years to capture intimate accounts of real people whose
stories we do not notice. Whether it’s that of a Bollywood dancer who moonlights as a rat killer in Mumbai (The Rat
Race), or of children who choose music over violence in an area known for gang warfare (Lyari Notes). Her films have
premiered at IDFA, were nominated for the Alliance of Women Film Journalists – EDA award, won the Mipdoc
Coproduction challenge at Cannes and were nominated `for the youth jury award at Sheffield (UK). Broadcast
internationally on channels like Arte, DR1, NGC, Al Jazeera, YLE and Netflix, in India her films have had theatrical releases.

Her latest film turns the spotlight on survivors of child sexual violence as they emerge `From the shadows’ through a viral wall art campaign. Chosen for 8 international forums.
