In keeping with its Art as Witness theme we are pleased to present one of India’s first graphic novelists, Orijit Sen in conversation with webcomic artist, Rachita Taneja. The session, moderated by media artist Amitabh Kumar, will explore the role of a popular art form in challenging mainstream narratives, moving beyond witnessing to build awareness, activism and advocacy.

Orijit Sen
Orijit Sen is a graphic artist, designer and cartoonist based in New Delhi, India, who has been deeply involved with the development of comics and graphic novels in India. His pioneering work River of Stories (Kalpavriksh 1994) is considered to be India’s first graphic novel. He co-founded the Pao Collective of graphic artists, and his comics and graphic art have been widely published and exhibited internationally.
Sen is also the co-founder of People Tree – a collaborative studio and store for artists, designers and craftspeople that has grown since its inception in 1990, promoting artisanal innovation, creative community building and social advocacy. He conceptualised, and spearheaded the creation of, one of the world’s largest hand-painted murals at the Virasat-e-Khalsa museum in Anandpur Sahib, Punjab; and has been engaged in an Indo-Palestinian project on cultural exchange and resistance in collaboration with theatre artists from both countries. In recent times, his works have been centrally featured at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale in Kochi and at the Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa.
Rachita Taneja
Rachita Taneja is a human rights campaigner and an artist based in Delhi. Her feminist webcomic Sanitary Panels comments on society, culture, and politics. Rachita is a co-founder of The Internet Freedom Foundation and jhatkaa.org.
