Mahé is a small, former French colony on the Malabar Coast of India. It carries a layered history shaped by colonial encounters, migration, language, memory, and cultural exchange. The film asks what remains of the French presence in Mahé today, through honest conversations, surreal landscapes and lived experiences. Why do colonial histories continue to inhabit everyday life long after political rule has ended?
Départ is an attempt to understand what remains when an entire chapter of history has passed, and what is quietly lost when the last voices capable of telling that story fall silent. The film invites audiences to look beyond the familiar narratives of colonialism, toward the quieter, more intimate ways history survives in places, communities, identities, and memories.

Mrinalini Tewari is an award-winning filmmaker, music producer, and singer-songwriter. The founder of Echoical Creations, her work explores histories, cultures, and communities at the intersection of memory, identity, and place, often bringing overlooked stories to the screen. Her films have received international recognition and have been broadcast on platforms including National Geographic and Disney+ Hotstar. Working across genres, she combines visual storytelling and sound to create intimate works connecting personal experiences with broader cultural histories.
