Sriram Panchu, renowned lawyer and pioneer of Mediation in India will be speaking with Kamala Naganand on the evolution of Mediation as a successful dispute resolution mechanism. Join us in exploring how mediation fosters mindfulness and healing with non judgemental justice; and the myriad applications of the process to public, private, domestic and international conflict resolution.

Sriram Panchu

Senior Advocate & Mediator

Mr. Sriram Panchu has been in the forefront of the mediation movement in India, and is an internationally recognized Indian mediator. He is an alumnus of the Government Law College, Bombay. He commenced practice in 1976 at the Madras High Court and was designated a Senior Advocate in 1996. His field of law practice is constitutional and commercial law, and he has appeared pro bono in several significant public interest.

For almost thirty years he has been in the forefront of the mediation movement in India. In 2005 he set up India’s first court – annexed mediation centre at the Madras High Court, and has assisted the Supreme Court and other High Courts to do so. He has trained over a thousand mediators. His books on mediation are Settle for More (2007) and Mediation Practice & Law (2011 and 2015) and the Commercial Mediation Monograph (2019). He has mediated a large number of complex and high-value commercial disputes in India and abroad. He has also been appointed by the Supreme Court of India to mediate significant public disputes; this includes a border dispute between the States of Assam and Nagaland, and a dispute within the Parsi community in Bombay over a ban on priests. In December 2018 the Bar Association of India conferred on him its Lawyers of India Day Award of Honour and Distinction.

In March 2019, he was appointed on a three-member panel to mediate the Ayodhya Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute. Mr. Panchu is a member of the National Legal Services Authority of India, (NALSA) and President of the national association Mediators India. He is a Director of the International Mediation Institute (IMI) and is on the panel of senior mediators of national and international institutions. He heads The Mediation Chambers which offers a range of mediation services. He serves on the committees of several public charitable and social organisations

Kamala Naganand

Kamala Naganand studied law at the University Law College, Bangalore and did her Masters in Intellectual Property Law at the George Washington University Law School. Her principal practice areas are Corporate Advisory, Intellectual property law, Insolvency and Bankruptcy and Private Client practice.

She started her career at her family run law firm, Sundaraswamy Ramdas and Anand, post which she co-founded Justlaw. She then went on to set up Aarna Law along with her partner Mr. Shreyas Jayasimha. As Managing Partner, Kamala has initiated various measures to bring women back to the workforce, flexible hours, work from home and maternity leave.

She heads the Intellectual property, Media, Technology and Data protection practise. She has been working on management of intellectual property, licensing and branding exercises for start-ups and companies. She has a passion for art and has been instrumental in building the firms Art law practice.

With a keen interest in economics, Kamala has helped institutions establish and enforce codes of conduct prohibiting fraud. She has worked on internal investigations and asset tracing and recovery and has built a team within the firm who specialise in Insolvency and Bankruptcy.

Kamala has also been working on case management for large and complex arbitrations and disputes.

She has advised HNI’s and private individuals over the years in on succession. The firm has worked with financial advisors and chartered accountants in setting up structures for investment and succession planning.

Kamala is a trained mediator and has represented clients as counsel in commercial mediations and is available to sit as a neutral through Aarna ADR, Singapore.
