Conceived as a two-year research and transmission project devised by Sandbox Collective (Bangalore) and Trickster-p (Switzerland), and supported by ProHelvetia, Swiss Arts Council, New Delhi, Awaken the Sleeping Giants involves artists from both countries exploring hybridization and inter-species entanglements as possible keys to a future relationship between humans and other living forms, with a special focus and reflection on how new formats of public encounter can become vehicles for new models of participation and coexistence in the creation of artistic projects and practices.
The workshop will involve 10 participating artists, and will be facilitated by the core group of art practitioners helming the biennial project Awaken the Sleeping Giants, their joint work will open perspectives for possible new formats of encounter with the public that can ground a different paradigm for artistic practice.
This project is a partnership between Sandbox Collective, Bangalore and Trickster.P, Switzerland and supported by ProHelvetia, Swiss Arts Council, New Delhi and Bangalore International Centre.
Aruna Ganesh Ram
Aruna is a performance director, designer, trainer and founder of Visual Respiration, a performance company committed to designing unique audience experiences. She holds an (MA) in Advanced Theatre Practice from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, London, United Kingdom. Aruna has been in theatre and performance for the last 15 years. Her works have been showcased at various arts festivals across the country.
Cristina Galbiati is a director, dramaturg and independent artist. She is co-founder of Trickster-p a research art project based in Novazzano, Switzerland. After a degree in Physical theatre, her focus has shifted from a narrower definition of theatre to include expressions that transgress genre boundaries. Among her works there are performances, walks and installations presented across the world. In 2017 Cristina Galbiati and her artistic partner Ilija Luginbühl were awarded one of the prestigious Swiss Theatre Awards.
Maria Da Silva
Maria Da Silva has worked with various theatre companies, while at the same time carrying out cultural mediation activities. Holding a master’s degree in stage direction at Manufacture in Lausanne, she develops proposals based on real-life investigations. She co-founded the collective Dénominateurs Communs with the landscape architect Nicolas Dutour. Their artistic work questions art and territory by imagining devices that stage the relationship of the living to its environment. They are currently involved with research and creation at the Manufacture on the dramaturgy of landscape in situ.
Nimi Ravindran is a writer, theatre director and pedagogue who has worked in the theatre for 20 years in various capacities. She is the co-founder of the Bangalore-based arts collective-Sandbox Collective. She was the artistic director of Just Theatre, a Bangalore-based theatre group where she produced and directed numerous theatre projects. She holds a Senior Fellowship in Theatre from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
Paramita is a performer, contemporary dancer, curator, and arts manager working out of Kolkata with over 20 years of contemporary dance training and representation across 18 countries. She is currently Co-Director of Artsforward and is deeply engaged in the field of environment, nurturing and supporting creativity and artistic ability in the youth, curating, and designing creative art projects. She is an ArtThinkSouthAsia 2016 Fellow and a Global Fellow of International Society of Performing Arts 2018.
Yves Regenass is an independent theatre pedagogue. Over the years he has developed a specific interest in the principles of theatrical performance, deepening the modes of interaction and narrative structures through numerous collaborations with groups from the independent scene in Switzerland and Germany. In 2010 he was one of the founders of the Berlin-based collective machina eX with which he has been working as dramaturg, director and performer, creating projects presented across the world. Since summer 2021 he is responsible for Digitale Dramatugie at Theater Chur.
