Based on the book CHINDIA: Journey to an Asian Century, this session sheds light on the nuanced dynamics between the two Asian giants. Offering a contemporary chronicle of India-China relations and their trajectory between 2008 and 2025, the discussion examines the influence of both domestic and bilateral factors. Can these two neighbours move past conflict toward the shared promise of an Asian Century?
While acknowledging the setbacks dealt by Galwan Valley and other episodes, the reasons that economic cooperation is essential to that march forward are made evident. Blending geopolitics with lived experience, the session offers glimpses of Chinese society and politics, comments on Indian diplomacy, and comparisons of Asia’s two largest economies and populations.

Shastri Ramachandaran
Shastri Ramachandaran is an author and journalist with over fifty years of experience across eleven newspapers in India, China and Europe. He writes on India-China ties and global affairs, focusing on democracy, development, justice and the social and cultural forces shaping public life. He is best known for Beyond Binaries: The World of India and China. His career spans postings at Deccan Herald, The Times of India, The Indian Express, The Tribune, China Daily and Global Times, among others, and he has served as Senior Consultant and Editor of China-India Dialogue.
Amit Kumar
Amit Kumar is a Staff Research Analyst with Takshashila’s Geostrategy Programme and a doctoral scholar at the Manipal Academy of Higher Studies (MAHE). He tracks global geopolitical and geoeconomic trends, with a focus on China, studying issues at the intersection of economy, technology and security. His writing has appeared in outlets including Foreign Policy, Nikkei Asia, ThinkChina, The Diplomat and Indian Express. He also teaches China-related courses at Takshashila.
