Organisation purpose / activities

The organisation strives towards making quality education accessible to every child and youth. We adopt a holistic approach towards learning; integrating the same within the public education system and various poor and under-served communities. Makkala Jagriti facilitates children and youth through a journey of self-discovery, which encourages them to explore their innate strength and potential. To make this a social movement, Makkala Jagriti partners with parents, teachers, and communities and collaborates with like-minded organizations and the government.

We work across four programs:
1. Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE): with Anganwadi-going children aged 3-6
2. Holistic Development Learning Centres (HDLC): with government school-going children aged 6-14
3. Yuva Jagriti: with youth aged 15-29
4. Child Care Institutions (CCI): with children in need of care and protection, for their holistic development

Impact assessment

Makkala Jagriti has impacted more than 50,000 children and youth, facilitating their holistic development through our programs directly in urban poor communities, and partnership with the public education system – Anganwadis, government schools and government childcare institutions.

We have impacted over 30,000 parents and teachers through our ecosystem approach of empowering all stakeholders around the child.

During the pandemic, we were able to support over 15,000 families with essential groceries and distribute 25,000 Learning Kits for children to continue learning at home.

The Department of Women and Child Development – ICDS invited Makkala Jagriti to become the knowledge partner for the ‘Learning at home’ program for Anganwadi children across Karnataka through an online learning program called Maneya Angaladalli Anganwadi, Maneyalliye Oota, Maneyalliye Paata’ reaching close to 66,000 Anganwadis in Karnataka.

To ensure children in Childcare Institutions continued to learn while their schools were closed, the Department of Women and Child Development – ICPS invited Makkala Jagriti to be a knowledge partner for ‘Project Ullasa’. Through this program, children and staff have been getting access to holistic learning and development opportunities through virtual engagement in the safety of their institutions.

Children and youth who were first-generation learners and have gone through Makkala Jagriti’s programs are today in successful careers such as bank managers, sports coaches, trainers, retail managers and more, and have become role models in their communities.
