ACCORD
Organisation purpose / activities
ACCORD (Action for Community Organisation, Rehabilitation and Development) is a registered society established in 1986, that has been working with the tribal communities of Gudalur for the past 30 years. It helped in setting up the Adivasi Munnetra Sangam (AMS) (registered society), an association of the four major tribal groups in Gudalur with around 20000 members across 4 tribes which have been defined by the Government of India as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG). We work in Gudalur and Pandalur taluks of Nilgiris district with the Paniyas, Mullukurumbas, Bettakurumbas and Kattunayakans, spread across 320 villages. ACCORD is committed to:
- To foster the community organisation of, and/or the rehabilitation of, and/or the development of economically, socially and culturally underprivileged/vulnerable communities, with special emphasis on tribal communities in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.
- To undertake any social, cultural, educational and economic activity/scheme/project that will help further the organisation, rehabilitation, and development of such Underprivileged/vulnerable communities.
- To initiate or undertake research/study programmes that will contribute to the furtherance of the aims and objectives of the Association.
Was born out of the experience of ACCORD. The major activity of JCIPC is to market the products of the Adivasis of Gudalur now under ‘The Third Share’ brand.
JCIPC is committed to the following mission:
- Support and enable disadvantaged communities to take control of their local economies through collective action
- Enable communities to use the power of collective action to become a proactive “force” within the market rather than remain vulnerable and passive victims of the injustices of a global free-market economy.
Impact assessment
- ACCORD has worked on ensuring land rights for tribals and securing 1-3 acres of land for about 2000 families in Gudalur valley
- Before ACCORD, only 10% of adivasis had agricultural land. But now, about 80% have agricultural lands
- implemented a host of livelihood projects including a landmark scheme to grow coffee and tea in reclaimed land
- supported nutrition schemes that focus on communities growing their own food
- formed associations to market precious forest produce such as honey
- brought back the idea of community-owned property through a 176 acre Madhuvana plantation.
- ACCORD, through the AMS, has supported tribal rights to forest produce, provided legal support wherever necessary and empowered the community in their fight to preserve their heritage and culture.
- when the community decided that they wanted their own hospital and school, ACCORD and the AMS helped in establishing ASHWINI (Association for Health and Welfare in Nilgiris) and VBVT (Viswa Bharathi Vidyodaya Trust)
- From day one ACCORD and its sister organisations have ensured that the decision makers will be the community and the professionals play a supportive and enabling role.
- Pioneered first health insurance in the country with New India Insurance
