The Belle of Amherst by William Luce, written in 1976, is a play based on the life of American poet Emily Dickinson. It was first performed by Julie Harris, who won a Tony for her role, in 1977. The story, narrated by the eccentric Emily herself, liberally interspersed with her sublime poetry, is a truly soulful journey for both the character and her audience. Susan George will do a dramatised reading of the play.

Susan George
Susan George is a BA (Hons.) graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA). Her most recent role was ‘Constanze’ in Arjun Sajnani’s production of Amadeus and before that, the ‘Begum’ in Girish Karnad’s Crossing to Talikota. She received critical acclaim for both performances.
Prior to Crossing, Susan played ‘Vanda/Venus’ in the two-person show of David Ives’ Venus in Fur. The show had multiple performances at Ranga Shankara and Jagriti. It was also selected to run at the NSD during the 2016 Delhi International Arts Festival. The play received standing ovations for all its performances. In Delhi, the Asian Age critic and editor Kavita Nagpal called Susan ‘sensational as the slippery, multi-layered Vanda’.
