The Ocean Between Us is a cross-cultural, immersive movement theatre project grounded in contemporary dance and writing. The work treats the body as a vessel for communication, connection, and care: a space to wrestle with difficult questions. Who are we beyond the labels, and how do we bridge the “ocean” of race, gender, economics, and identity that divides us?
The collaboration began as a self-designed Instagram residency, the artists responding to questions as intimate as they were unanswerable: how can I listen so I can hear you? Where does it hurt? What are you afraid of? Later deepened across each other’s countries and shared through workshops in India and Australia, their practice shaped a methodology that brings tenderness into moments of conflict and clashing perspectives. Raw, fragmented, and resistant to linear logic, the work invites audiences into the mess of these questions, and into the possibility of rest.

Performers
Diya Naidu
Diya Naidu is a Bangalore-based performance maker and contemporary dancer working at the intersection of movement, text and theatre. Her practice blends yoga, partner work and embodied storytelling to explore themes of longing, shame and resistance. She founded Citizens of Stage Co Lab and is part of the East African Soul Train. A former repertory dancer at Attakkalari, she teaches at Drama School Mumbai and co-runs a space for dance and interdisciplinary performance. Her recent work The Ocean Between Us, with Australian artist Nadia Milford, examines the dancing body as both vessel and voice.
Nadia Milford
Nadia Milford is a performance artist working across dance, film, theatre and installation. Her practice is driven by an exploration of the ways in which lived experiences shape identity, and belonging: to body, people and place. With a feminist perspective, she examines inherited histories, collective memory and the power of performance to foster dialogue and transformation. Whether on stage, screen or in participatory spaces, she seeks to create work that connects, challenges and resonates.
