Bengaluru ByDesign
Experience. Explore. Engage.
Bengaluru ByDesign is a festival to celebrate creativity, encourage design thinking and explore the innovations in design today. We are setting out to demystify design and make it more accessible to public with our extensive program. From large-scale installations to intimate pop-ups, we are infusing Bengaluru with design for a period of 10 days to get conversations rolling. Local arts and global traditions, modern innovations and reconstructed classics, the exemplary and the everyday, Bengaluru ByDesign is bringing everything design, together.
Everybody is invited to to be a part of our immersive experience and look at the world through the lens of design.
John Gollings
John Gollings: the history of the built world is the first major survey of Gollings’s photographic practice. This includes photographs of iconic modernist buildings, ancient sites of spiritual significance and the ruins of abandoned cities. Constantly innovating with photographic technologies, and investigating new architectural subjects with a restless enthusiasm, Gollings has developed a distinctive visual style. This style typically conveys a personal or physical connection with the structure being photographed. Rather than documenting buildings in a way that reproduces the impersonal elevation plans of an architectural diagram, Gollings embeds the viewer in face-to-face encounters with built environments. Using a range of compositional techniques and visual effects to invest architecture with personality, he portrays buildings as lively habitats rather than static monuments.
Liz West
OUR COLOUR REFLECTION
In collaboration with the British Council
Supported by Beautiful Homes by Asian Paints, Star World Wide
Our Colour Reflection creates a conversation between the viewer and the setting using more than 765 mirrors made of coloured acrylic. There are 15 colours in all and the mirrors with diameters of 30, 40, 50 and 60cm are set at different heights so that they both reflect the roof space of the old nave, revealing parts of the architecture that would otherwise be invisible, and project colour up into the historic interior. It is playful, elegant and engaging but also thoughtful.
There is an element of performance to this work; it puts the audience to the fore, demanding a response, in West’s words ‘physically, emotionally, psychologically or even spiritually.’ Viewers will each have their own perspectives and their own experiences tempered by movement through the space and through time. By going unplugged here, West emphasises that while artificial light can be manipulated it can only, at best, replicate the dynamism, shifting mood and changes in quality embodied in natural light” – Francis Pearce

About Bengaluru ByDesign:

Design has diversified. It now touches on innumerable aspects of contemporary culture and business, yet its reputation still hinges on product and, ultimately, consumption. The second edition of Bengaluru ByDesign aims to showcase a diversity of design practices contributing to the reputation of the city by adding new stories to it. Our programme is about the layering of stories, not just installations but the talks, education, the conversations that take place around it. We hope to bring a global perspective of design and each element talking to an audience who are hungry for design ideas and enjoying the quality and diversity of what is on offer. We hope you will enjoy the numerous conversations on design, technology, materiality, sustainability, community design and more.
