Each step in block printing is a small act of wonder. This workshop, led by Gandhigram Trust, Tamil Nadu, and guided by senior artisan Manikandan, invites you to step into the world of Kasimkari block printing.
From tracing the journey of natural dyes to preparing fabric and imprinting motifs with hand-carved blocks, the process unfolds slowly, rhythmically, like the craft itself. Beginner-friendly yet deeply rooted in tradition, the workshop offers a new perspective.
Born of Khadi traditions and Gandhigram’s commitment to ecological responsibility, this practice reminds us that making by hand is also making with care. Each participant will receive a pre-mordanted kerchief to print on and take home: an intimate keepsake of colour and memory, holding within it the quiet rhythm of a timeless craft.

Manikandan is a senior artisan and educator at Gandhigram Trust, where he has spent decades preserving and teaching traditional textile practices. A master of natural dyeing and block printing, he is especially known for his expertise in indigo fermentation methods that combine artisanal integrity with ecological responsibility. Beyond his work with rural communities, he collaborates with leading fashion and textile brands across India, guiding them toward sustainable production. With his rare blend of technical mastery and social commitment, Manikandan embodies the living continuity of India’s craft traditions.
