A selection from the vast book and magazine design output of one of the world’s greatest Book Designers Prof Kohei Sugiura of Japan, will be on display at the exhibition. Over 80 books and magazines including deluxe books; panels showing the creative process of the most celebrated of his book designs; over 20 cultural posters; and catalogues of various cultural events will be on display along with 20 annual calendars on the theme of Letterforms from the Japanese typesetting company ‘Sha-ken’.

The exhibition is an opportunity to see the best in book design in the world; and also to understand the creative process behind the designs. Movies explaining the thought process in designing the books will also be shown along with a large screen interactive presentation of Sugiura Design Archive of the Musashino Art University Museum, where the viewers will be able to browse through the entire collection of Sugiura books.

Prof Kirti Trivedi, the curator of the exhibition, will give an illustrated talk on the design methodology of Kohei Sugiura, at the inauguration of the exhibition.

Graphic Designer and Professor Emeritus at Kobe Design University, Japan, Kohei Sugira is a revolutionary innovator in all aspects of graphic design, with a core focus on book design, typography and information design. He has created an inexhaustible wealth of design work – which have influenced a whole generation of leading designers all over Asia.

Born in 1932 in Tokyo, Japan, Sugiura graduated from the Tokyo University of Arts with a degree in Architecture. He taught at the legendary Institute of Design at Ulm, West Germany (1964–67); and at the Kobe Design University (1989–2003). The work of Prof. Sugiura spans the entire field of graphic design: from magazines and books to posters and postage stamps, and from exhibitions to environmental graphics. He has been honoured internationally with numerous prestigious awards.

Prof. Sugiura’s extensive writings about perception, visual communication, music and iconography with a special focus on the cultural traditions of Asia constitute an invaluable body of profound design thinking, which will continue to guide and inspire the design community forever. His major books include Asian and Japanese Forms and Designs, Drumming the Cosmos, Wind and Lightning: A Half-Century of Magazine Design by Kohei Sugiura, Books, Text and Design in Asia, and Luminous Mandala: Book Design of Kohei Sugiura.

Kirti Trivedi

The initiator and the founder of India’s first Master of Design Programme in Visual Communication in 1981; Kirti Trivedi (born 1948, Gwalior, India) is a former Professor from the Industrial Design Centre, IIT, Bombay. In 1981, he worked as a UNESCO Fellow in Japan, under the guidance of Prof. Kohei Sugiura, and was introduced by him to the intellectual depth and the richness of Asian Design.

Besides teaching and design research, he is active as a design consultant in the areas of Graphic Design, Book Design, Exhibition and Museum design, Environmental Graphics, Signage, and Product Design: with numerous publications and awards both nationally and internationally. In 2011, he was invited by the School of Art, Design and Media at NTU, Singapore to help set up a Centre for Asian Design, and introduce new programmes in Asian Design, Projection Arts and Islamic Design.

His current research is in developing appropriate interaction design solutions for Indian needs based on emerging technology possibilities. He is also engaged in developing a new model for design education, appropriate for the digital age, with the changed context of AI tools and a new student profile.

At present, he is a Visiting Distinguished Professor; helping set up a School of Innovation and a Creative Crafts Centre there; and mentoring the B.Des. programme at the Centre for Design Studies in Indore.
