Who doesn’t want to remain strong, mobile, and independent as long as they live? Is there a silver bullet to achieve it? Perhaps, not. So, how exactly does one do it? The answer is a healthy lifestyle. We can prevent or reverse Osteoporosis and sarcopenia with lifestyle interventions. Can it be done without a fancy gym membership or complex equipment? How useful is walking or running? What about vitamin D or calcium supplements? What exactly is resistance training that has the power to prevent and reverse bone and muscle loss that naturally starts in our 30s itself?

Older adults and, increasingly, the young too are beset by chronic lifestyle diseases such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Osteoporosis and sarcopenia often fly under the radar. Sadly, this comes to light suddenly after a fall and the resulting fracture or a long period of immobility. From debilitating chronic back pain in people of all ages to conditions like osteoporosis that severely deteriorate one’s quality of life and significantly contribute to all-cause mortality. Weak bones and muscles are real, but not always visible issues.

In his talk, Dr Rajiv Bajekal will illuminate how conditions related to the degeneration of the neuromusculoskeletal structure such as osteoporosis are an underestimated epidemic. The session hopes to shed light how on the diseases of bone and muscle weakness are a huge menace, especially in the Indian context where strength and resistance training, often confused with bodybuilding, is not a popular choice as a form of exercise and sedentary lifestyles are increasingly common. His presentation will be followed by a conversation with Nidhi Nahata and a Q&A with the audience.
