Developments in Hindustani Classical Music

The Concert will be interspersed with inputs from Pt. Praveen Sheolikar about the history of violin in Hindustani Classical Music and its progressive developments. He will discuss the characteristics of Tantrakari (with a focus on layakari and taal-samvaad) and Gayaki (with a focus on Khatka, Murki, Gamakand Meend) styles of playing violin. He will also explain the patterns of tuning and techniques of plucking and bowing in the two styles.
He will demonstrate the above styles, characteristics and techniques through Bandishes (Compositions) set in different raags and, while doing so, will explore the canvas of those raags. Taal (Rhythm) is an inseparable element of any musical presentation. Shri Yogesh Bhat will provide the Tabla accompaniment to Pt. Praveen Sheolikar during the concert. The talk and demonstration will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

Praveen Sheolikar
Trained under renowned musicians like his grandfather Pandit Rambhau Sheolikar, who was well-versed in vocal music, sitar, harmonium, violin and tabla, and his father, Pandit Vasantrao Sheolikar, a well-known senior violinist, honoured with “Shikhar Samman” of the Government of Madhya Pradesh, the potential of Pandit Praveen Sheolikar was realised early in his life when, at the age of just 12 years, he received the National Talent Search Scholarship and a Gold Medal at the All India Radio Music Competition when he was just 21.
A Top Grade artiste of Akashwani and Doordarshan, Pandit Praveen Sheolikar has won admiration and appreciation not just from connoisseurs of Indian Classical Music and the Indian audiences, but also from violinists, musicians and music lovers of the Western world. His work and performances have resulted in popularising violin in general and playing Hindustani Classical Music in gayaki ang in particular, in the country.
Yogeesh Bhat
Yogeesh Bhat is an Indian classical percussionist who specializes in tabla and is recognized as one of the finest abla artists of the upcoming younger generation of India, known for sensitive and thoughtful tabla accompaniment and solo performances. He was born in a music-devoted family which hails from Sagar, Shivamogga of Karnataka. His tabla lessons began at the tender age of 4 from Vidwan Bhaskar Hegde Muttige and later he pursued it from Pt. Madivalayya Sali. Presently he is mentored and undergoing advanced training from internationally renowned tabla artiste Pt. Ravindra Yavagal and Sri Kiran Yavagal of Bengaluru respectively.
Yogeesh’s keen interest in innovation led him to foray into the fields of Carnatic music and fusion music as well. He is currently undertaking training in the Carnatic thala system under Vidwan K U Jayachandra Rao, a senior and accomplished Mridangam Vidwan from Bengaluru India. He has also received training in Hindustani violin and vocals. Academically he holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
