An Evening of Baithaki Andaaz

Baithaki is a performance form of Kathak in which the dancer “dances” her repertoire with hand gestures and facial expressions while seated.
In this “Mehfil”, dancer Rani Khanum brings to life the Baithaki Andaaz through Thumri and recreates the charm of the old world of Lucknowi Tehzeeb from the courts of the Nawabs through some rare Ghazals and Bandish.

Dancer and choreographer Rani Khanum has internalised the spirit of Kathak as few others have. Trained by famous doyens such as Ustd Fattan Khan, Smt. Reba Vidyarthi and Pt. Birju Maharaj, Khanum’s work explores Sufiana poetry (qalam) and Islamic verse, courtesan repertoire and “traditional” repertoire of Lucknow Gharana.
Three decades of Kathak dance have made Khanum a master storyteller who is not only an extraordinary dancer, but also a generous teacher.
