Community Engagement with a Deep Reach

The session will highlight the critical contributions of social responsibility programmes that have engaged with community over an extended period time. The panelists include –
Meena Raghunathan has been in the non-profit sector for over 35 years. At the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, she headed the CSR function for the GMR Group, with activities in over 20 locations in the country. The Foundation has a mandate to ‘develop social infrastructure and enhance the quality of life of communities around the location where the Group has a presence’.
Snigdha Parupudi, whose book A Silent Revolution on the Srinivasan Services Trust, the social arm of the TVS Motor and Sundaram Clayton, brings this engagement to the fore. As the blurb says, ‘What started out as the charity wing of a well-known business group quickly transformed into something quite different, evolving into a model of community development that is self-sustaining and empowering.’
Sanjeev Narrain, great grandson of the founder and secretary of the Trust of the RBANM’s Educational Charities. RBANM’s work in education began about 150 years ago when the founder, Sri Narrainsawmy Mudaliar started schools and educational institutions for boys, girls and students from Dalit communities in the city of Bangalore.
The discussion will underline the positives, the difficulties, and the lessons learned on how to build sustainable and stable programmes in different thrust areas, touching on efforts both in urban and rural areas.

Snigdha Parupudi
Snigdha Parupudi was born and raised in Canada, then transplanted into a small town in south India. She is a gold medallist from Madras University and has experience working in the social sector. Her work has been published in Parabola, National Geographic Traveller, Open, The Indian Express, and The Hindu BusinessLine. She lives in Chennai.
Meena Raghunathan
Meena Raghunathan worked at CEE from 1986 to 2005, where she headed the Networking and Capacity Building programme. She has been involved in the development of educational material for teachers and students, and has written more than 40 books on various aspects of Environment and Environment Education. Ms Raghunathan was also the Vice-Chair (South Asia) of the IUCN-Commission on Education and Communication, an international network of environmental educators. Since 2005, she has been working as Director, Corporate Social Responsibility, with GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, which works in the areas of Education, Health and Livelihoods.
AA Sanjeev Narrain
Sanjeev Narrain studied law at National Law School of India University, Bangalore, where he later taught as a visiting lecturer. He holds an MBA from Melbourne Business School.
Sanjeev is Secretary, RBANM’s Educational Charities.
