The Brahmaputra born as Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet transforms into the Dihang River in Arunachal Pradesh, and later morphs into Luit, Dilao in Assam, is a trans-boundary river flowing through Tibet, India, and Bangladesh – which contributes to the complexity of history, politics and lives in the region.
In this episode of BIC Talks, journalist Tora Agarwala is in conversation with author of the Braided River, Samrat Choudhury where they talk about the environmental, military and political issues the region faces through Samrat’s book which blends travel, memoir and history with the present.

Samrat Choudhury
Samrat Choudhury a.k.a. Samrat X is a journalist and author from Shillong, India. He is a former editor of broadsheet newspapers in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. His latest work, The Braided River, is a travelogue following the course of the Brahmaputra.
He was one of the two editors, along with Preeti Gill, of an anthology titled Insider Outsider on this divide in India’s Northeast, which was published by Amaryllis in 2019, to positive reviews. His first novel, The Urban Jungle, was published by Penguin Books in 2011, and nominated for the Man Asian Literary Prize.
Tora Agarwala
Tora Agarwala is currently a journalist with The Indian Express.She has been covering a wide range of topics including politics, culture and human interest from Assam and the other sister states of the Northeast since April 2018. Previously, she was feature writer with the Conde Nast group of publications in Mumbai. Tora completed her schooling in Assam before graduating with a degree in History from St Stephen’s College, University of Delhi.
