Cities are now habitat for most of humanity.  But do they have the ecological capacity to sustain lives worth living?  This book discussion will focus on environmental politics in Delhi and Bengaluru, looking at the role of ‘bourgeois environmentalists’ who claim to speak for nature and society.  How well have these cities addressed the challenge of sustainability with social justice?  How can we create liveable cities and vibrant commons?

Amita Baviskar

Sociologist

Amita Baviskar is a sociologist and, since 2017, Professor at the Sociology Unit, Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi, India. She received the 2005 Malcolm Adiseshiah Award for Distinguished Contributions to Development Studies, the 2008 VKRV Rao Prize for Social Science Research and, in 2010, was awarded the Infosys Prize for Social Sciences – Sociology in recognition of her analysis of social and environmental movements in modern India. Baviskar studies the cultural politics of environment and development in rural and urban India.

Arpitha Kodiveri

Doctoral Researcher

Arpitha Kodiveri is a Hans Kelsen Fellow and Doctoral Researcher in Law at the European University Institute. Her research examines land conflicts and legal mobilization by forest-dwelling communities in the mining areas of Odisha, India.She has previously worked as an environmental lawyer supporting forest-dwelling communities in their struggles to assert their forest rights. She has an LLM from UC Berkeley as a Fulbright Nehru Fellow and a BSL LLB from ILS Law College, Pune.
