An IIT Engineer Unpacks Wine
Wine 101.
Speakers
Why do some wines cost over $100 and some just $15? What is sustainable farming with respect to wine? What is the good soil composition for growing wine grapes? What are the grape varieties? How will climate change affect wineries? Can you actually smell or taste “tar, cat piss, and canvas shoes” when you swirl a glass of wine? Speaking of which, why should you swirl a wine glass? What is the chemistry and physics of wine tasting?
Listen to an IIT engineer, Deepak Gulrajani unpack the mysteries of wine. So go ahead, open a bottle of wine and sit back to listen to Deepak explain how to choose, buy and enjoy wine.
Speakers
Deepak Gulrajani
Deepak Gulrajani is the founder/owner of the award-winning vineyard, Nicholson Ranch in the Napa-Sonoma border. His Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays have won acclaim throughout the world. Nicholson Ranch is an “estate” wine—the entire process from planting the grapes to bottling the wine is done in-house. They are aged eighteen to twenty months in French oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. The owner, Deepak Gulrajani, graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and worked in finance before creating this “gravity-flow” sustainable winery.
Shoba Narayan
Shoba Narayan loves wine– its history, aroma, taste, and yes, buzz. She enjoys aromatic, medium bodied wines, particularly gewurztraminers, viogniers, and pinot noirs– from Sonoma and Burgundy. She hopes to drink a DRC wine in a Zalto wine glass some day.
