Film by Vedant Manwadkar
An informal waste picker by profession, Devanna wakes up at four every day and sets out to gather waste by the roadside. This is how he earns his daily wage to take care of his family. He is a migrant from North Karnataka and lives in the city of Bengaluru in an informal, non-notified slum of Sajjepalya near the Summanahalli service road with minimum to no access to basic amenities. Individuals living in the settlement migrate from Koppala, Hubli and Raichur in Karnataka. This community of Chennadasarus worships Yellamma and Parashurama as their village deities through their music, which is an ancestral occupation. Discrimination and the need to earn a living compelled Devanna to move away from music and into waste picking. However, his passion for the rhythm is still alive and the film allows us a glimpse into the community and Devanna’s musical interests as he jams with Vedant and Maitri, students from Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design and Technology.
