SUMMARY:The Siachen Glacier - Managing Mountains and War
DESCRIPTION:Inside the world’s highest\, harshest battlefield\, this talk covers not only the mountains but the war\, politics\, financial cost\, and human toll of the ongoing conflict in Siachen. Here\, India\, Pakistan\, and China have been engaged in hostilities for decades. The talk includes over 180 photographs documenting the Siachen Glacier and the people involved. \nDrawing on visits to the region since 1980\, including reaching Karakoram Pass\, Col Italia\, and Indira Col\, the three northernmost points of India\, the talk traces the Indian Army’s role in the glacier\, the young soldiers who serve there\, and the sacrifices they make. It considers the challenges civilian expeditions face on the glacier\, questions of leadership\, and a proposal for a “Siachen Peace Park” to end the conflict. Though a ceasefire holds today\, soldiers continue to endure the glacier’s harsh conditions. \nIn collaboration with: \nThe Himalayan Club\nFounded in 1928\, the Himalayan Club is one of the earliest mountaineering clubs established in the subcontinent\, with a presence across India and abroad. Its objectives extend beyond climbing to publications\, awards\, lectures\, social activities\, sponsorships\, and mountain film festivals. First published in 1928\, The Himalayan Journal has earned worldwide recognition as the most reliable reference on the Himalaya\, Karakoram\, and Hindukush. Members include some of the most decorated mountaineers and explorers in India and abroad. The club will soon celebrate its centenary year! \n \nVenue: Seminar Halls\n\n\nExploration at the Edge of Conflict\nRSVP here (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScd7dQdNuGbZ3i2lTdtLZgK-MSMJy6J3bjSKyDsEttLsDbHxg/viewform?usp=publish-editor)\n*Speakers*: Harish Kapadia\, Prakash Menon\n*Event Categories*: Environment\, Politics\, Society
