Bengaluru, Karnataka 560 071 India

Amidst the backdrop of curiosity, a group of mental health professionals came together to create a space to engage in the conversations around mental wellness beyond the confines of therapy rooms, by venturing into the realm of books and movies. These professionals from the Green Oak Initiative are collaborating with BIC to bring book & movie choices that are handpicked and diverse in genre but connected with mental health themes to deepen our conversations.

In ‘Shelf Care,’ our Movie & Book Club, we will alternate between discussing books and movies or TV shows with a mental health theme. Join us for engaging discussions that cater to your literary and cinematic interests.

Our book pick for October is a gut wrenching blend of biography and memoir. Not for the faint hearted, but a definite read for discussion and reflection, The Trauma Cleaner by Sarah Krasnostein, ponders on what it means to live with the memory of great pain. The book alternates between describing the daily work of the protagonist, a transwoman who owns a trauma cleaning business, and her own history of abuse and neglect.

Take your time to read this book and join us for enriching discussion on mental health on the backdrop of social injustice.

In collaboration with:

Ashlesha Bagadia

Mental Health Practitioner

Dr Ashlesha Bagadia was an avid reader and movie buff long before she became a mental health practitioner. For over a decade, she has been using literature and popular media as a platform to engage communities, reduce stigma and create safe spaces for difficult conversations. She is the co-founder of The Green Oak Initiative, a community mental health centre in Frazer Town, which provides mental health care for a diverse range of mental health issues. The organisation also conducts a range of community activities such as book & movie discussions, interactive plays, sports and movement activities, to improve mental wellbeing of the community.

Shilpa Nagaraj

Mental Health Practitioner

Shilpa Nagaraj first crossed paths with Dr Ashlesha in a professional hospital setting. Their shared love for books and movies sparked lively discussions that led to working closely with Ashlesha, eventually co-deciding the club’s book & movie selections. This journey, from selecting books & movies  to exploring diverse perspectives, fuels their excitement for discussing nuances of mental health of literary characters. She is also a Clinical Psychologist affiliated with The Green Oak Initiative.
