SUMMARY:Gandhi’s Long Shadow
DESCRIPTION: \nGandhi’s ideas did not go unchallenged\, even by those closest to his moment in history. This talk draws on the book Arguments with Gandhi\, examining the ideological disagreements he had with contemporaries including Ambedkar\, Lenin\, Mandela\, and Savarkar. What can a century of disagreement teach us about how to live now? \nUsing Gandhi’s legacy as a lens\, the talk offers a moral and political history of the modern world\, one built as much from argument as from agreement. Gandhi’s debates with his contemporaries\, and later generations’ arguments with him\, foreground questions we have yet to resolve: how do we resist political tyranny? How do we address discrimination based on caste\, gender\, and race?
