An evening of rich and diverse Kannada theatre music promises to be a journey into time starting from mid-1900s when professional theatre productions peaked in India in keeping with the independence struggle; to the time starting from the late 1970s when amateur theatre began evolving in myriad ways across the nation.

About Spandana: With B Jayashree as its creative director Spandana’– a Bengaluru-based organization dedicated to theatre came into being in 1976. Close to five decades of journey, Spandana has staged many magnificent plays. One of the striking features of the group is its successful efforts in using modern techniques to present Karnataka’s folk tradition in an aesthetic style. The troupe has an impressive lineup of highly talented artists, expert technicians, and directors.
The group with its innovative productions established its reputation both within and outside the country. It has carved a niche for itself in Karnataka with its productions, which have unique styles of their own. Some of these productions are Barrister, Lakshapathi Rajana Kathe, Karimayi, Uriya Uyyale, Agnipatha, Siri Sampige, Manthara, Chitrapata, Sadarame, Girija Kalyana, Neevu Kaanire among others written by eminent playwrights in Kannada.
B Jayashree started her theatre journey at age 4 in her grandfather, Kannada theatre legend Gubbi Veeranna’s “Gubbi Channa Basaveshwara Swamy Theatrical Company”. Later she joined the National School of Drama, New Delhi, and graduated in the year 1973. Gubbi Company and NSD not only provided her with education but also helped her to gain valuable life lessons in the process. The informal means of interaction and learning served as a basic block for her future. In her 68 years of theatre journey, B Jayashree has a versatile and prolific experience working with directors like Ebrahim Alkazi, B.V. Karanth, N. S. Venkataram, and Prasanna among others. She has acted and directed close to 100 plays in Kannada, Hindi, English, and Konkani languages.
Rohini Raghunandan is a multifaceted theatre, television and cinema artiste; a trained & performing musician of Carnatic classical music, light music (Sugama Sangeetha) & theatre music (Rangasangeetha), Rohini has been associated with Spandana since over 4 decades, acting in more than 500 theatre shows.
Preethi Nagaraj is a political analyst, theatre practitioner, journalist and a writer based out of Mysore. Has a long standing association with Spandana, and Kannada theatre for over 2 decades. Has also documented B Jayashree’s life in her book ‘Kannaa Mucche Kaade Goode’ playing the narrator.
Aravind Kuplikar is a cinema director, actor, and theatre practitioner. Aravind has a Master’s degree in Kannada literature and a post graduate from the most renowned film institute in India, “The L.V. Prasad film and TV academy”. He has been associated with Spandana for over 3 decades.
Lokesh Achar is an actor who has performed on stage, television and in cinema too. During the day his time is dedicated to his work at the Bosch company but his evenings are exclusively for theatre. He has been associated with Spandana since the last 3 decades.
Deepa Agarwal is a banker by profession, driven by the world of art, predominantly music and theatre. Trained under the guidance of Violin Vidwan Late Shri Shankarappa in Carnatic vocal, Deepa has been associated with Spandana theatre as singer, actor for over 15 years now.
Pooja Rao is a trained actor, Carnatic and Hindustani singer, Pooja has been involved with theatre, cinema and television for many years now. She is associated with Spandana, and many other theatre groups and television production companies being part of superhit shows. She works as a manager with Praveen D Rao.
Vivek G is a Musician/actor/sound engineer with a diploma in piano from KM Conservatory college (Chennai) and pursued acting course from Tent Cinema. He has performed more than 300 shows as a bass guitarist and is actively engaged in theatre.
Bharath G V
Bharath GV is a theatre practitioner by passion starting from his college days. A Carnatic Classical trained percussionist he has been trained in Ninasam and has worked under many renowned directors. He has won consecutive “Best Music” award for 3 years at Rangabhhoomi State level theatre competition in Udupi.
